Poverty Awareness
Did You Know....?

There are about 121,771 people in DuPage County (13% of the population) with incomes below the poverty level.

The average monthly rent for a two bedroom apartment in DuPage County is $900--139 hours of work at minimum wage.

Two-thirds of DuPage County households making less than 35,000 per year spend more than 35% of their income on rent.

A single parent with two children (infant and preschooler) needs to make $22.97 an hour in order to be economically self sufficient in DuPage County.

As many as 63,000 individuals in DuPage lack access to health care because they are uninsured.  Over 36,000 others on Medicaid have trouble finding physicians willing to treat them.

Some of you may be aware of these statistics, and others may not.  Some of you may know someone who fits into these statistics, and some of you may be one of the people who these statistics are describing.

One area that we at Horizon would like to become involved in, is with those in our community who fit within the picture of the working poor.  A way in which we can become involved is through making people in our community aware of what poverty looks and even feels like.  We will be doing this by hosting an event for people in our community and the surrounding areas to gain better understanding of poverty.

The poverty simulation experience we will be using is designed to help participants begin to understand what it might be like to live in a typical low-income family trying to survive from month to month.  The participants will be going through the daily activities of someone who lives in poverty.  For example, the participants may have to go to an unemployment office, go to the grocery store and use their EBT card (electronic benefit transfer, i.e. food stamps), wait in line at the social services office, or even participate in illegal activities.

The event date is to be determined.  Contact Horizon Church for more information.
